Blog # 36: Analysis, Family Guy

“Family Guy” is a television show televised late at night. This show is for the adult audience which shows informal language and somewhat offending scenes. The show can be sexually deviant towards one another, and can be harmful for the viewers. This show is for the audience who can take a joke, and not be offended.
“Family Guy” is an American cartoon series created by Seth MacFarlane. The entire series focuses on the Griffin family, a dysfunctional family with many problems; consisting of three children: Chris, Meg, and Stewie, and Peter as the father, and Louis as the Mother. They have a family pet, named Brain who appears to be a white Labrador. Each show consists of informal humor which parody American Culture.
One episode took place where Chris went on a date with a young female who appeared to be suffering from Down syndrome. This certain episode can be extremely hurtful to the viewers who have a friend or family member who suffers from the same mental disorder. Sara Palin for example, took great offense from viewing this episode due to the fact that her baby son has Down syndrome. In my opinion, this is what this show is about, crude and rude humor. If people do not like or agree with what Family Guy has to offer as a television show, and then they should not watch it! However, I do think the episode was a little on the harsh side. They could have done without the Down syndrome part because so many people suffer from the mental disorder, and that can be extremely hurtful to watch.
I do enjoy watching Family Guy because it relates to our Society as Americans. Every small joke that is put inside each and every episode has a direct meaning. I do not understand all of the jokes, because this show is directed towards the adult audience, and I am a young adult that doesn’t understand all of the jokes that are placed in the show. I do think this television show is hilarious, but I think the maker of this show needs to pay close attention on what he uses in his episodes.

Blog # 35: CANCUN 5

All four of us sitting at a square table were eating and Max started the conversation. He explained to my dad the whole ordeal about the timeshare and what it had to offer. I was not really paying attention that much because I was devouring my omelet at this time.
After we ate Max took us to some sample rooms throughout the Lagoon Suites that the timeshare would include for us. He took us up a spiral staircase that led to a pair of suites. These suites looked more like individual condos that a rich person would have on a beach. Max led us into a specific suite and my mouth dropped to the floor. This suite was huge! Not only was it massive in size, but the interior design was breath taking. It had a huge living room, dining room, kitchen, two bathrooms, and two queen sized beds. This was not even half of the condo! There was an upstairs to this condo too. The marble stairs led us up to the master bedroom that held a huge king size bed with a large Jacuzzi bathtub in the middle of the floor. There was also a large balcony deck outside the master bedroom. The master bedroom was connected to a third bathroom among the suite. I fell in love with this suite and took as many pictures as one could only imagine.
Max finally led us out to the suite and down to the loading dock to where the water taxi would take us to another resort that was included in the timeshare that my dad was beginning to get interested in. While we were waiting for the water taxi to arrive, a waiter brought over 4 pina coladas to quench our thirst. I was surprised at how amazing the service at this resort was! While we were all slurping our drinks the water taxi arrived, and approximately 10 people entered the boat to take us to the “Royal Sunset” resort.
The water taxi ride from Lagoon Suites to Royal Sunset was only about a five minute boat ride. It was so much fun to see all the buildings and resorts along the coast. As we arrived to the Royal Sunset to view another large suite included in the timeshare I noticed how large this resort was. There were ten floors throughout this large resort. The lobby was breathtaking with a long palm tree sculpture wall and a massive fish aquarium separating the lobby and the kitchen. Max took us up the top floor to show us another show room. All the rooms surround a huge balcony that led down to the dining room with vines hanging from the roof to the bottom.
The room that Max showed us was large and beautiful. This room however was not as breathtaking as the first room we visited. I did, however like this resort much better. This resort was much larger and had more tourists visiting. The pool was better, and the lobby was enjoyable.
From this point us three were then taken to a large room that branched off this last resort that we were at. This was the time for my dad to make the decision to either buy a timeshare, or say “no thanks.”

The walk home from downtown to our resort at Laguna Suites was absolutely awful! It took over an hour to get there. It was not only a long walk, but it was painful too! My feet hurt so bad from wearing my heels that I decided to walk barefoot half-way home. I also had to use the bathroom extremely bad, too. The walk home was cold because I was only wearing a beach dress. I hope that we never have to walk anywhere again. By the time we got to our room it was after 11:00 PM and I still had to shower and get ready for bed. Our wakeup call was set to be at 7:00 AM the next morning and I knew I was going to be dead. I got ready for bed as quickly as I possibly could so I could jump into the sheets for some shut eye.
The next thing I knew it was 7:28 AM Tuesday morning. The people at the front desk failed to give us a wakeup call. I was livid because our shuttle bus was set to pick us up at 7:55. I quickly shouted to my sister and dad that we needed to get up and get ready because we are running thirty minutes behind. Since I got ready all last night, I only had to quickly do my hair and put makeup on.
All three of us ran down to the lobby to hop on the shuttle bus when it arrived. The presentation for the timeshare was held about 5 minutes away at a resort called “Lagoon Suites”, an extremely similar name to our small resort called “Laguna Suites.” This resort was beautiful and much bigger than our resort. We went to the dining room that was on a huge deck next to the ocean. This room was enclosed by windows and made you feel like you were on a cruise ship. We met up with an extremely good looking young man from France. He was a tall and lanky young man. His name was Maxine, but thankfully for him he goes by Max. I knew right off that he was not from Mexico because of his accent. After meeting him, I wish I had an accent! He sat down at our table so we could all eat together and discuss the topic of a timeshare. The waiter took our drink order and then we went to the buffet to pick out what we wanted to eat for breakfast. I was not that hungry yet, but I knew it was going to be a long day ahead of us so I decided to get something healthy. I picked out mostly fruit and had a cook make me up a delicious omelet with all the fixings. Since I already had coffee waiting for me at our table, I decided to get some juice to wash down the omelet. There was a dark green colored juice that looked interesting to me. I knew some kind of vegetable had to be in it, so I sampled it to see if I wanted an entire cup. I took a sip and almost spit it out! It was disgusting! I asked a young waiter what was it in and he said spinach. I made a grumpy looking face and dumped it out. I like spinach as a food, but I do not want to drink spinach!
I went back to the table to join my dad, sister, and Max for breakfast and to talk about the day ahead of us.

After my dad paid our bill at Senor Frogs, we left to go back to our small resort. Since it was getting late the shuttle buses no longer drove around tourist. If we wanted to get back we either had to walk or pay for a taxi. My dad decided that we should walk so we could see the scenery of Cancun from Senor Frogs to the Laguna Suites. We figured it was not a far walk, so my sister and I both agreed that walking would be fine. I then noticed I was the only one wearing heels. These heels were not extremely tall, but walking in heels can be painful later on.
While walking we came across a flea market. My sister and I, being the shopaholics that we are wanted to take a look. They were just closing up the market as we were walking by. One customer offered for us to come inside his area that was only covered by a large piece of cloth. We all knew we were taking up his time and we really did not expect to buy anything. We saw some crazy items that you would never expect to see in the United States. There was a flute that was shaped and resembled the male genital. Being the obnoxious person I am, I had my sister take a photo of me with the flute. My dad shook his head and walked away. The Mexican of the shop thought it was hilarious to see an American girl do something like that. Throughout the shop was dozens of sculptures of Jesus on a cross that was made out of fishbone. It was truly amazing that someone could sculpt something so difficult out of bone. This particular shop did not have any clothing items, which is what I was hoping to buy, but it did have several wrestling mask that I thought about buying for my boyfriend, Tanner. These masks were ridiculous looking. They looked like they all belonged to Nacho Libre.
The only thing we left with was a few pictures from that shop. I felt bad because the owner left his shop open longer just for us. Oh well, we will be back I am sure because it was only the first day that we have arrived and we still had 3 full days left to do our shopping. It was getting late and we all knew we had to wake up early the next morning to attend a presentation at a different resort. My dad won this entire vacation through a golf tournament. In order for our resort to be completely free, we all had to attend a presentation in hopes for my dad buying a time share. He was open-minded about the presentation and did not plan to buy anything. We finally decided to walk home around 10:00 PM and we had to wake up at 7:00 the next morning. We were cutting it close if we wanted to get an entire 8 hours of sleep.

After my dad, sister, and I walked along the several mile stretch of beach and took dozens of pictures in the sand we decided to go back to our dinky room to shower and get ready for dinner. We all decided that tonight we were going to eat at Senor Frogs. My sister and I, being the divas that we are, wanted to dress up all cute for dinner. I wore a white beach-style dress that I bought in the Bahamas and my sister wore a black strapless dress. When we finally all got ready, we walked down to the lobby to wait for the shuttle bus to come pick us up to take us downtown.
It was only a short ride to downtown and we still had enough sunlight to take a few more dozen pictures of our goofy selves. My sister and I took a picture next to two statue frogs and gave them a big kiss on the cheek. Finally after scoping all the scenery that downtown had to offer we suddenly became really hungry and walked back to Senor Frogs for some food. We entered this cute little restaurant shack and was immediately seated to an extremely small round table. The Mexican waiter took our drink orders, and since the drinking age was only 18, I was excited to legally order my first drink. I ordered a blue frozen drink that came in a huge palm-tree shaped plastic cup. I think I was more excited about the cup than the actual frozen drink. My sister ordered a banana-rum drink and it was placed in the same 22 oz. palm tree cup. My dad, being the typical guy he is, ordered a massive draft beer. My sister and I took even more pictures of us with our drinks. When the waiter finally came back around he took our food order. Since I was in the homeland of authentic Mexican food, I ordered a jumbo enchilada. My sister ordered a cheeseburger and my dad ordered a gigantic burrito with all the fixings.
When our food was being prepared in the back, a small senorita came over to our table with a whistle in her mouth, shot glass in one hand, and a bottle of tequila in the other. We were not sure what she was doing at “our” table but she suddenly filled up the shot glass with tequila and shoved it down my dad’s throat. Before he could even respond to what intitally happened, the senorita shoved another shot down his throat and spun his head in circles to make him dizzy. I have several pictures on my camera of this scene. The Mexican worker then came over to me and repeated the act she did on my dad. By this time I didn’t know what was going on. She went away to bother another table with tequila.
We ate our delicious dinner, drank our strong drinks and left with a hefty bill. The senorita charged us for those shots! They were $3.00 a shot, and we each had 2. I figured these shots were going to be free because we didn’t even ask for them in the first place!

Blog # 31: CANCUN 1

While approaching the runway for landing I gazed at the beautiful sight of Cancun’s bright blue beach. I have been to several beaches and this one is by far the prettiest due to the bright color. It went from white, to aqua, to turquoise, and finally faded into a deep sea blue.
After we finally landed I sighed with relief because I was ready to start my vacation! We picked up our luggage and immediately had to go through security and customs. I got my passport out for the fifth time on this journey and was ready to put it away for this trip. After we cleared security it was time to travel through the small airport and catch a ride from a taxi to our resort.
The trip to the resort almost made me sick. Not only were the roads extremely curvy, but the taxi driver drove like he was a race car racer. He had no respect for the people involved. I hung onto the “oh-shit handle” for dear life. I finally realized there was a seatbelt within the car and immediately put it on for extra safety. What I saw on the ride to the resort was amazing. Palm trees, Mexicans, and tourist were everywhere. I knew I defiantly was not in Kansas anymore!
When we arrived to the Laguna Suites we were immediately greeted by three Mexicans to take our bags inside the lobby area. While my dad was checking us in, my sister, dad, and I were given a pale green mojito as a “welcome drink.” I slurped that thing faster than anyone could imagine. I was ready for some “Mexican-style” drinks to come my way. After checking in we went to our room just around the corner. The resort was very remote and something I wasn’t used to. All the other resorts I have stayed at on my other island vacations were very large, with hundreds of tourist, and all-inclusive. I knew this resort was not going to be near as enjoyable as the resorts I stayed at in Aruba, Dominican Republic, and Bahamas but I was willing to make the best of it. We unpacked our luggage and immediately jumped into our bikinis and wanted to head to the beach. To our surprise, our resort was not on the beach. I was very disappointed at this point! We had to ride a shuttle bus to a bigger resort in order to go to the beautiful blue beach. It was only about a five minute ride to Sunset Royal, one of the biggest resorts in Cancun. We arrived and I immediately wished we were staying there because it was absolutely breath taking.
The reason why we were staying at the Laguna Suites is because that resort was the only resort included in our package. My dad won this entire trip through a golf tournament and we only had to pay for our flight out of Kansas City. Since this was basically a free trip, I was not going to complain a single time!

Blog #30: A Starbucks day

Around 2:40 am today I woke up for no reason. I never can stay asleep the entire night and it gets really annoying for me because I wake up at 3:30 every day. My alarm goes off at exactly 3:30 today and I really didn’t want to get up. I just wanted to go back to sleep for several hours. Thankfully I know that I have unlimited access to coffee once I get to work, so that gets me motivated to get up and get ready. I get ready by putting on makeup and pulling my hair up into a ponytail. We have a very strict dress code at Starbucks so I put on a black skirt, black hose, and a black turtleneck sweater. I hardly ever wear jewelry because it just gets in the way. Today I decided to wear a scarf with my outfit because it was very cold outside when I went to go start my car. Once I got to work around 4:15 am just like every morning, I just listened to my iPod while waiting for my boss to get there to open the store. I am usually the first person there every morning because I have a phobia of being late.
Once we finally got into the store I move into action so we can be ready by 5:00 am for our wonderful customers. We used to have 3 people to open the store every morning but the past month it is has only been me and a shift manager. When there are only 2 people who open the store I have to work twice as fast. The first thing I do when I get there is clock in and then put my belongings in the back room. I then rinse all the coffee urns with hot water, put espresso in the espresso machine, and fill the pastry case with our morning pastries. After I have everything under control I put on a headset to wait for our early birds to come through the drive-thru. We usually don’t get really busy until around 7:00 am and that last until 10:00 am. There are many customers that I see every single day. My very favorite customer is an older guy and his name is Tim Sanders. He only wants me to make his drink which consist of 4 shots of espresso with mocha and white mocha sauce. It is topped with steamed milk and a heart shaped mocha swirl. I call it a cup of love because I love seeing him every day.
Today I got off work around 10:15 am and was glad I didn’t have class today due to my Anatomy lab doesn’t start up until next Thursday. I was going to head over to the Heskett Center for a quick run, but I had a pounding headache from the day’s work and it was super cold outside. I went home to relax for a bit, checked my e-mail, and logged onto facebook. I really needed to catch up on some of my DVR’d shows on television. I started off watching 2 American Idol shows and then I watched “The Biggest Loser” from Tuesday night. I never have time to watch television anymore. Hopefully this weekend I can catch up. That is all until next time!

Blog # 29: First Day of School

Today started like every other weekday for me. I wake up at 3:30 in the morning and get ready for work. I then arrive at Starbucks where I am a barista at approximately 4:15 early in the morning. I worked until about 8:30 today and rush off to Wichita State to start my first day of school. I was very nervous in starting a brand new semester this spring. My first class of the day was Men and Masculinity with 250 students. This was the largest class I have ever taken. We didn’t do much in that class, but by judging my teacher's personality I knew I was going to like that class. My second class was English 101 and was significantly a smaller class than my first one. I liked how we were able to partner up with someone we didn’t know and asked personal questions about them. My third class was Human Anatomy and Physiology. I was quite surprised that I knew three people in my class with one of them being the supplement instructor for the class. The supplement instructor is the tutor for the entire class who helps students who are struggling. I didn’t really pay that much attention because we were only going over the syllabus. After my Anatomy class ended I had a 2 hour gap before my last class of the day begun. I decided to go to the Heskett Center to work out for a bit. I started to work out in the weightlifting room and I completely felt like the outcast because I was the only girl working out in there. After I left the weightlifting room I went to the cardio room to run for 20 minutes. I still had about 30 minutes until my last class started, so I rinsed off in the shower. My last class for the day was Meditation. I was really excited about taking this class because I felt like I needed a relaxing class to relieve some stress. Our teacher didn't show up, so the yoga teacher decided to show us some yoga. Last semester I took yoga and I absolutely loved every minute of it. After we were dismissed from class around 5:30 in the evening I was ready to go home. After I finally got home around 6:00, I got ready for bed and waited for my mom to come home for dinner. I was extremely hungry because I forgot to pack a lunch with me while I was at school all day. My mom put in a frozen pizza in the oven, and while we waited we ate salads. After dinner I watched the news like I do every night. I honestly can’t remember what was on the news because I was so out of it from exhaustion. I know Wednesdays are going to be very long for me this semester. When 7:00 finally rolled around I finally decided it was time for bed since I had to wake up at 3:30 tomorrow and start all over.

Blog # 28: Dodge Charge 2010 SuperBowl commercial

For this blog entry the English 101 class was ordered to watch a youtube video online. The video was titled “Dodge Charger 2010 SuperBowl commercial. This commercial only exceeded a smidge over a minute time frame but sent out a powerful message within the short time.
Throughout the entire commercial there was a man as the narrator speaking in monotone for all men in the commercial. I believe the man speaking was Michael C. Hall. The first man speaking was lying down on a bed fully clothed and appeared to look wide awake. His line was short and he said “I will get up and walk the dog at 6:30 A.M, I will eat some fruit as part of my breakfast. I will shave, I will clean the sink after I shave.” The second man speaking looked tired as he sat in what appeared to be a small fast food restaurant. His line was also short and to the point. The black man said “I will be at work by 8:00 A.M. I will sit through two hour meetings. I will say yes when you want me to say yes. I will be quiet when you don’t want to hear me say no. The third man, also looking tired and upset had a messy hair style. I appeared this man was sitting inside his living room with pictures of friends and family in frames behind. He said “I will take your call; I will listen to your opinion of my friends. I will listen to your friends’ opinions of my friends. I will be civil to your mother.” The fourth man appeared very serious while he was dressed in a business suit and he appeared to be at work where he hated to be. He said “I will put the seat down. I will separate the recycling. I will carry your lip balm. I will watch your vampire TV shows with you. I will take my socks off before getting into bed. I will put my underwear in the basket.” After the camera was taken off the last man, the narrator continued to say “And because I do this, I will drive the car. I want to drive. Charger Mans Last Stand.”
The whole reason for this commercial is for these men to back down to their girlfriends and wives to make them happy. In making their women happy by doing things they do not want to do in reality, they feel like they can escape by driving the car. The car is the new Dodge Charger. The narrator spoke in the same tone for all men, while the men never once moved their mouths for talking. All the men looked sad, tired, mad, or serious. The reason why they had this look of discomfort on their face is because they do not like to back down for their women, but will do it because they want to escape by driving the car they love.

Blog # 27: Xenon

My good friend, D’nae is going to school to be a licensed practitioner for skin beauty. She goes to school at Xenon that deals with skin and hair. I have always wanted to get a professional facial because I heard great things about facials from people who have had them done. D’nae said she could hook me up on a great price at Xenon. Since she is just a student she doesn’t get directly paid but would get credit for having a new customer join Xenon.
I made an appointment with her on Tuesday March 9, 2010 to get a relaxing facial from her. After I signed in on the customer sheet I followed D’nae back to the room where I was going to get this facial. I had no clue what I was in for. Before being informed what this facial was going to consist of, I expected just an quick mud mask on my face that would take only a few minutes. I underestimated this experience. She told me it was going to take between an hour and an hour in a half and that I needed to unclothe from the waist up because of the massage that I would be receiving in addition to the facial. I did just as I was instructed to do.
I lay down on this small hospital looking bed and she immediately put on surgical gloves on her hands. She then turned on this machine that steamed out eucalyptus extract that helped to open up my clogged pores. She put a hot substance on my face that felt amazing. She massaged as she was spreading the oil all over my face. It was sticky, but felt like my face was being reborn. She then put an extremely hot rock in my hand and massaged my entire left arm. She did this while the oil on my face was being absorbed into my skin. After approximately five minutes of having my left arm massaged, she then moved towards my right arm. The oil she used for my body was a sensation I have never felt before. Words can’t describe the feeling. My skin felt like it was on fire and at the same time it felt like it was on ice.
After she finished massaging my arms she moved back to my face where the oil was time to diminish. I figured my facial was over by this time, but she kept putting on different types of product. After she rubbed off the oil, she put on a deep hydrator for my skin because she knew I was about to leave for Cancun in the next week and wanted my skin to be prepared for the harsh sun.
While the hydrator was being absorbed into my baby soft skin, she massaged my tense shoulders. I thought I was going to fall asleep at this point because my eyes kept getting heavier and heavier by each grasp.
Finally after over an hour of being massaged with hot scented oil I felt like I just woke up from a two hour nap. It was time to pay my bill and I knew it was worth every penny. I think everyone should treat themselves to a facial at least once a month because it not only feels amazing, but it is also very healing for the skin. My skin immediately felt like a baby’s skin when they are first born. I am already excited to book my next appointment because I know I was be disappointed with the outcome.

Blog # 26: Compare and Contrast

While writing this recent compare and contrast essay I found it very difficult on how I was going to write in third person between two career fields that I was interested in. After contemplating, I figured out how to overcome this obstacle.
Since I chose to write my essay over two career fields that interested me, I decided to write about the two fields that I am currently studying. My major here at Wichita State University is dental hygiene and my minor is exercise science. Since I was extremely interested in talking about those two career paths, I thought writing this essay would have been fairly easy for me.
First of all, I found it extremely difficult to come up with a thesis statement that was arguable. I have never liked writing thesis statements because they were difficult for me to do. Practicing writing thesis statements in class helped, but not enough for this essay. After I had my introduction completed, I knew how the rest of my essay was going to flow. Since I was familiar with both topics, I had plenty of knowledge to compare and contrast the two.
Another area I found difficult while writing this essay was repetition. It is extremely difficult to find synonyms for the subject one. The word one can become very boring when used over and over throughout an academic essay. After thinking about other words to use during this essay, I came up with simple synonyms such as: the student, person, he or she. I think this strategy worked well for me because in my last narrative essay I was docked significant amount of points due to repetition even though I worked a significant amount of time and put in an abundance amount of effort towards that essay.
Today while we were work shopping with a partner I found it very helpful knowing there was another pair of eyes reading my essay. Tanner Gonzales was my partner and he pointed out some errors on my essay that I overlooked. He also told me to change some things in my essay that included revising a certain paragraph of mine because he thought the paragraph seemed weak and boring to read. I really appreciated his input and I will use his suggestions so I may receive a better grade this time around.
Thankfully I have people who are close to me who have English background experience that can revise my papers before I turn them in. The more people who read my essays, the more feedback I will receive. I think everyone should take into consideration to have their friends and family read their essays before submitting because you never know when someone else might catch an error throughout the paper that you may have missed.

Blog # 25: Salt

When people think of the word “salary” one may think that specifically means how much a person makes annually from their career. How on earth did someone come up with the word “salary” for this definition?
According to my Human Anatomy and Physiology teacher, Dr. Kent Thomas, he said that the word salary came from the prefix sal, which comes from salt that we put on food to give it some extra flavor. He said hundreds or even thousands of years ago people didn’t have refrigerators to keep their food cold so they could preserve the killings much longer. They would have to kill the animal, such as, a pig and then eat what they could and then the rest would go to waste because they didn’t have anything to keep the dead carcass cold, fresh, and savable. They did this until they discovered salt! They would put their killings in and around salt to preserve the dead animal.
Now how did the word salary originate from salt that we eat? Well, hundreds of years ago when a person would work they would get paid in salt because back then salt was a much valuable item and everyone wanted it, like gold! They were much happier to receive salt as payment because it was so hard to come by. The term “a little bit of salt goes a long ways” is extremely true because they would only get paid in grams.
Back then salt wasn’t ingested like it is in the twentieth century. Today, Americans consume salt like it’s a necessary vitamin! The reason why Americans are so unhealthy and overweight is because the consumption of salt. Salt increases blood pressure and makes the body retain water. When people are retaining water, the heart has to work extra hard to pump blood through all that excess water molecules. The only reason why people use salt on food is for taste purposes. Salt has no nutritional value that has positive feedback, it actually only leaves negative feedback. Americans are adding salt to their food, when it already has salt in the ingredients! Meat, especially beef, is packed with added salt. Even fast food places, such as, salt adds an abundance amount of salt to the fattening French fries.
I try to stay away from salt just like thousands of other Americans are. Salt just taste good! But it leaves horrible negative effects on the human health. I wonder if there is a salt substitute that we could add to our foods to make it taste just as wonderful. I think Americans would be healthier if salt stayed as a preservative rather than making salt a food item.

Blog # 24: Tattoo

Tattoos are a piece of art that is printed on a human body for the intent of the rest of their remaining life. A tattoo is a marking made by inserting indelible ink into the layers of the most superficial skin, the epidermis layer to change the color of pigments and design. Tattoos on a person are a personal type of modification that one chooses to do so. However, tattoos on an animal are for location purposes for identifying a certain animal from the marking.
Tattooing has been practiced worldwide for hundreds of years. Way back then, Indian tribes would tattoo their faces because they were more superior to the rest of the tribe. Today, tattooing is based on personal modifications that one might have an interest in. I have three different tattoos, located on three different parts of my body, and I have received them in three different countries. I honestly can not tell the difference from one tattoo shop from different countries. My very first tattoo was needles on my bony body when I was only 16 years old. My sister and I were in Aruba with my parents for a family vacation and decided to recieve the same tattoo and name our tattoos “sister tattoos.” Our matching tattoos was a tiny hibiscus flower. Mine was located on my left hip bone, whereas my sister’s was located on her left ankle bone. The flower is outlined with black and filled in with beautiful different colors: pink, orange, yellow, and white. My tattoo is more vibrant on my hip than my sister’s ankle because of the skin type. There is an extra layer of skin located on the hands and feet, lucidum. My step dad also received a tattoo at the same tattoo shop in Aruba. He had some tribal inked on his right biceps.
I received my second tattoo in the Dominican Republic. I was visiting that dirty island for my 18th birthday with my mom and step-dad. I really wanted to get another tattoo and I especially wanted to get a tattoo of a fish or other sea life that represented me getting certified as a scuba diver. I decided to get my tattoo of a fish. The fist resembled a magnet I bought in one of the gift shops. I received this tattoo on the bones of my right foot. I was surprised at how much more painful this tattoo was. The tattoo artist could barely speak English, but he did a phenomenal job!
My third tattoo was received in my home country, the United States of America. I received this tattoo in May of 2009 by an Artist named Shannon from Bullwinkle’s tattoo shop. I got a huge sun, formally called the sublime sun on my right ribcage. This was excruciating pain and took two sessions to complete because my skin was starting to swell right after he finished with the outline. This tattoo took a total of 3 hours and cost me $350.00. I was broke after getting this tattoo, but it was completely worth every penny. This sun tattoo is outlined in black with a mushroom as a forehead and other designs within the tattoo: knife, skeleton, bullet, and a fish. This tattoo has a huge amount of color and designs.
I personally think people should go for it if they are considering a tattoo. Yes they are painful and very expensive, but the art that remains on your body is there for the rest of their life; and that is a price you can’t pay. However, when getting a tattoo, you really need to take in some thought on what you want to get. Don’t get a tattoo just to get something on your body because art is something that is meant to be beautiful.

Blog # 23: A loss of 2

I have a real life tragic story that I think needs to be heard around the world. I am from a very small town of 8,000 people called Wellington, Kansas. Everyone knows everyone and this was a very close community that had a huge heart for our high school football team.
On March 7, 2009 there was a tragic car accident involving 4 people. The car accident happened on a country dirt road and the driver lost control, over corrected, hit a ditch and ejecting all four passengers. They were all drinking and driving. The only thing left of the truck that the passengers were in, was the cab. One of those passengers was a very good friend of mine and in my class all throughout school. Her name was Brayden Popplewell. She was the most life-threatening and spent a total of 25 days in a coma. Her injuries included brain damage, and lacerations on her spleen and lungs I believe. She was in the hospital for approximately 2 months and then went to rehab. The other 3 passengers lived, but were extremely lucky. The driver of the vehicle only received a broken arm and no DUI charges were pressed because of insufficient evidence.
On June 4, 2009 Brayden’s older brother, Dustin was tragically killed in a car accident. He swerved to miss a deer and rolled his truck. According to police, alcohol was involved. You think the family has been through a lot already? Think again…
On October 4, 2009 Brayden was involved in another alcohol-related car accident on another country dirt road just 7 miles away from the accident that occurred in March. This time, she wasn’t so lucky. She was pronounced dead at the scene. There were a total of 7 people in the 2 car crash and Brayden was the only fatality. The driver of the vehicle’s name is Patrick (Ryan) Burr and he is 20 years old. He was driving under the influence and failed to yield. He was then struck by another vehicle killing Brayden. Another passenger in the truck was life-watched to Wichita, Kansas. The 2 passengers in the other car were fine and sustained minor injuries.
Patrick (Ryan) Burr can face up to 14 years in prison if convicted. Fortuneatly for Burr, he only received 2 years in prison. In my opinion, that wasn’t enough because he took the life of an innocent person, Brayden. She is now dead because Burr decided to drive when he was under the influence. According to another girl in the vehicle who was the person that was life-watched to Wichita, she said that the reason why Burr failed to yield is because he was in a hurry to get home. That decision will hang on his shoulders for the rest of his life.
To make a long story short, I just basically want to get across that this innocent family lost 2 children due to drinking and driving exactly 4 months apart from each other. I think their story needs to be heard so this kind of thing doesn’t have to happen again.
When tragedies happen in our small town of Wellington, Kansas it is a huge deal. The entire town was affected by it and my heart goes out to that family for losing 2 kids due to alcohol.
Brayden will always be remembered as a beautiful young girl who used to always laugh. She had a bright future ahead of her until she made the decision to get in a vehicle of a person who was drinking. She had a lot of friends and I truly think this story needs to be heard.

Blog # 22: Phobia

Everyone has something that they may be scared of, or even worse people might have something that they are absolutely terrified with. When someone is scared or terrified of something that is known as a phobia. There are literally hundreds or even thousands of different types of phobias known to mankind. Someone might be scared of the littlest thing, which could in reality consume their life.
I have recently visited a website www.phobialist.com that list hundreds of different types of phobias. I have a mixture of two different phobias: Achluophobia and Claustrophobia. Achluophobia is the fear of darkness. I have always been terrified of being alone in the dark since I was a little girl. If I happen to be with someone I know in the dark, then I am not as scared. Being alone in the dark is the worse feeling for me. I feel completely vulnerable to all sorts of attacks. I always think if I am alone in the dark then I could easily be abducted from a psychopath. Claustrophobia is the fear of small confined places. I have never had this fear until about two summers ago when I attended a huge rock concert in Kansas City, Missouri that had approximately 55,000 fans. I decided to crowd surf on the huge crowd and to my surprise I was dropped right smack in the middle of a mosh pit. The people pushing each other were at least twice my size and I honestly thought I was going to be trampled to death. I could not get out of that scary mosh pit fast enough. I had to have a security guard pull me out of the mad crowd in order to save my life. Every since that terrifying incident at that rock concert, I was never comfortable in being in small confined places with a large amount of people. Every time I step foot in an elevator my heart throbs in pain because I am so scared. It is not so bad when I am alone in an elevator, but when people crowd into a tiny elevator with me I start to freak out. I try not to let these two different phobias consume my life, but I have to deal with it on a daily basis. I know several people who said they would not attend a concert because they are so scared of crowds. I am scared of large crowds in small places too, but there is ways to get around of that phobia. I still attend rock concerts and always will, but I am more aware of my surroundings and I will not put myself in a position that could harm me.
There are phobias on that list I posted earlier in my blog that will blow your mind. If you cannot find a phobia in your inner self, then I can imagine you can easily find something you are scared of by viewing this phobia list.

Blog # 21: Gender Roles

In both the movies of Indiana Jones: The Raiders of the Lost Ark and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. The characters hunt for an ancient relic. Gender roles in the movies differ greatly. In Indiana Jones, the man, Dr. Jones rescues the woman and kills the bad guys. In contrast, Lara Croft, the woman, Ms. Croft saves the man and destroys the bad guys. The movies did have one similar view of gender roles, only men can be titled as the “bad guys.”
In most movies, men carry the characteristic as the good guy who defeats all the bad guys by blowing their heads off and saving the day. In Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Lara is titled as the good guy and saving all the people as she possibly can by killing off all the bad guys. She uses sniper rifles to protect herself, others, and the old Seeing Eye triangle. In contrast to Indiana Jones: The Raiders of the Lost Ark, Dr. Jones uses his own stability to save people and kill the bad guys. He doesn’t necessarily need to use the sniper rifles to protect himself and the relic like Ms. Croft did.
Dr. Jones is trying to get the ark for school purposes while the Nazis’ are trying to get the ark because of its’ supernatural powers. Lara wanted the triangle because he father wanted it and she needed to keep it away from the bad guys. The “bad-guys” wanted the “item” for the wrong reasons. The girls in the movies were very different. Marion who was a character in the Indiana Jones movie owned a bar but was pretty dependable on Dr. Jones. Lara Croft was very independent and could hold her own.
I personally enjoyed watching Lara Croft: Tomb Raider better because it held more action and I was able to follow the story better than Indiana Jones: The Raiders of the Lost Ark. I thought Tomb Raider had a better storyline.
