Blog # 20: Rock Squad Girl

When I attended the Theory of a Deadman concert on Tuesday February 9, 2010 I made a comment to my good friend Christina that we need to become a T95 rock squad girl. Since then I really gave it some thought and actually contacted T95 to see if they are in need of any more rock squad girls. Through several e-mails back and forth between Ray Michaels and I we finally set up an interview. I was really nervous because I personally don’t want to have to sacrifice my personal life for this because I knew I wouldn’t even get paid for it.
I went there for my interview today and was given significant information on what exactly the rock squad does. There is a contract that I have to abide by. The contract states that I must attend at least TWO events each month. Those events would include; rock concerts, charity work, and fashion shows. The charity work is like a carwash every summer that raises money for a specific charity. For the fashion shows I would wear little outfits on a stage and I am not sure that I am 100% okay with that. The only reason why I am not sure with that is because I am conservative when it comes to showing “too much skin.”
However, I really want to do this because I really think it would be fun! BUT, I wouldn’t want to possibly jeopardize Tanner and mine’s relationship. I really DO love him and I DO see a future with him. I don’t want him getting jealous of other guys looking at me or wanting to take pictures with me. I don’t want Tanner getting mad that I would have to wear inappropriate clothing on stage for a concert/fashion show.
I am not sure about the decision I am going to make because I have to sign a contract that is only renewed in December. I am torn! I couldn’t possibly imagine not having Tanner as my boyfriend and I really don’t want anything to come in between us. He said he won’t make the decision for me. I know deep down he doesn’t want me to do it but he said he won’t be “mad” if I choose to go through with this decision.
I haven’t made any decisions yet regarding signing the contract. I want to make sure that this is what I really want to do. Yes I want to do it, but would it really be worth having issues with Tanner, School, Starbucks, and Family if I go through with this? I am going to meet with a Rock Squad girl sometime soon to get more information. The guy interviewing me did say that the biggest issues with past rock squad girls is boyfriends. Tanner did give me a promise ring, so I do know he is serious about me. I really don’t want to have to choose between the two (Tanner, T95). I don’t think I should have to choose between the two because I think if it is really meant to be with Tanner he will understand the choices I make in my life.
After talking to Tanner about this whole ordeal, he has been very supportive of me. He said he will be 100% okay with the decision I make. After I talk to this rock squad girl I will make my decision.

Bog # 19: William Eugene Martin

My uncle William Eugene Martin passed away peacefully and joined all of the angels in the heavens sky on Wednesday February 23, 2010. He died from what is believed an apparent heart attack.
William Eugene Martin was born on February 11, 1956 to Elaine and Eugene Martin. William (Bill) was the oldest of six children. His whole family is from Conway Springs, Kansas. Bill has been survived by his Mother and Father of Viola, Kansas, Brett Martin of Conway Springs, Kansas, Robert Martin of Wellington, Kansas, Janet Kibbe of Conway Springs, Kansas, Janice Roth of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and his two sons Darren and Kyle Martin both of Conway Springs, Kansas. Bill is joining his sister, Jeanna in heaven with the lord Jesus Christ.
My father, Robert Martin called me at approximately 6:25 in the evening of Wednesday February 23, 2010. He informed me that he was on his way to Wichita. I thought that seemed strange because he never goes up to Wichita in the middle of the evening. He has some discomfort in his voice which led me to believe that something has happened. I asked my father if everything was alright or not. He replied by saying “they think Bill has died.” I said in a high voice “What do you mean?” He told me that he received a phone call from my grandma that she found my uncle lying on the floor of his garage at his Conway Springs home. She immediately called the ambulance for help. The paramedics came to the house and they were unable to revive him. I told my father that as soon as he arrived at St. Francis to let me know if my uncle was okay. I received a message via text message from my father at exactly 7:10 in the evening. It said “Bill did not make it, no need for you girls to come to the hospital.” I could tell in his text that he was extremely upset. The first thing I thought was my poor grandma is now going to have to bury two of her children. No parent should have to go though what my grandma is going through. I hate seeing my dad and grandma so upset, it just breaks my heart apart. Nothing is worse than seeing people you care so deeply about upset and sad.
After I received the dreadful text message from my father, I immediately called my boyfriend for some comfort. I was extremely upset by the loss of my uncle because he was such an amazing person inside and out. He always came to my personal events such as, my birthday parties and graduation parties. I wasn’t exactly close to him, but over the last couple of years I have grown to know him.
After he had his leg surgery a couple of years ago he became a very outgoing person and very fun to be around. I am truly saddened over the loss of my uncle. However, I truly think God throws challenges at us because he knows that we will overcome the grief and become stronger in the end. Everything happens for a reason, but unfortunately something awful happened to my Uncle, Bill. I will never forget him.

Blog # 18: Time Management

Once seniors in high school finally escape the prison-like building by graduating with all of their peers, it is now the time they make the decision on whether or not they want to continue their education at a community college or university. The majority of my class chose to go on to college to achieve a degree for their future.
While attending college my freshman year, I quickly noticed I needed to kick it into high gear if I was serious about my future. When I was attending high school, I would have considered myself as a slacker and a huge procrastinator. Transitioning from a young high school student to an adult who is attending college is a huge difference. Since I was a procrastinator in high school, it made it very difficult for me to focus on my studies in college. In high school I hardly ever studied and didn’t put my best efforts into my assignments as I could have. I was an average “B” student in high school and looking back now, I could have been a straight “A” student if I really applied myself in my school work. If I was unsure about something in high school, I was too afraid to ask my teachers questions for help. Becoming a college student, I quickly realized if I don’t ask my professors’ questions then I will never know the answer. My professors’ can’t mentally read my mind. In high school, teachers literally force their students to do homework, whereas college professors could seriously care less if a student fails to apply themselves in homework.
Time management from high school years to the college years is completely different. In high school I had a study period every day at school. I was allowed enough time to easily finish all my assignments during school, and if I don’t then I would always have time to finish my homework assignments at home. During college I rarely have time during class to study and do homework. Most of my study time and homework takes place outside of school. I usually come home every night and study or do homework for at least two hours. On the weekends, I am constantly studying and reading my book for my class. It is extremely hard to manage all the things in my life such as; work, school, homework, studying, reading, boyfriend, friends, and family. On top of all of that I am considering becoming a t95 Rock Squad girl, but in reality I don’t have the time to do so.
Time management is the most important quality to have in college. Students must make time to do their school work. Students who put other festivities before school will become failures and jeopardize their future. Advice I would give to others would be to make sure school becomes the first priority before fun. You can’t have fun knowing your future isn’t developing!

Blog # 17: Favorite Color

Everyone has a specific color that is their very favorite. My favorite color is green. To go in even greater detail of the certain shade of green that is my favorite, I would have to say lime green is my all time favorite. The reason why “lime green” is my favorite, because I believe the color signifies spring and summer, which just so happen to be my favorite two seasons of the year. Every time I see a bright colored shade of green, I just smile because it makes me so happy to visualize that a color can be so beautiful.
Green is actually not a primary color, it is secondary, meaning that two colors had to combine together to make the beautiful green shade. When yellow and blue is mixed together it produces green. The more yellow you use in the mix the brighter the shade of green. The bluer the mix the darker shade of green is produced. A shade that had a more abundant amount of yellow in the mix makes a lime green color. A shad that had a more abundant amount of blue in the mix makes a hunter green color.
Green is not a very ordinary color; it is actually very unique making it one of the reasons why I love the color so much. You do not get to see many wardrobe items that are bright green and vibrant, making some of the clothes in my closet dull. Green is the color of life, making it so beautiful. The grass we walk on is so beautifully green and spiky. The only color you see on a golf course is green, making the whole area look hypnotic. The money we use to purchase items is green and everyone uses money in one way or another.
When I was a young teenager and was allowed to decorate my own room, I of course chose green. My bedspread and curtains were white with different shade of green dots covered on it. I had a big bright green fuzzy rug and pillows to match. I even had green lamps and green picture frames to join with the green decorations. When I was able to drive, I begged my parents to buy me a lime green Volkswagen bug. My dad talked me out of it by saying I would get sick of it fast. I listened to him despite the fact I wanted a bright green car.
Green is my favorite color for many reasons. It really has affected my life in many ways. Every time I see the color, I melt invisibly. It is so hard to explain in words how much I enjoy seeing the color green. Green can be everywhere; money, clothes, food, beverages, animals, and anything you can imagine. If green is so beautiful on Earth, just imagine what it will look like in Heaven!

Blog # 16: Graduaion Commencement

The day I finally graduated high school was a complete fuzzy blur. I honestly don’t remember any advice that was given to me. I was so ready to get out of the claustrophobic feeling prison that I tuned out all advice that was given to me that day, if I perhaps was given any at all. My only focus was walking across that stage to pick up my diploma that I worked for my entire life while flakily enjoying the handshake of my former principal that I had no respect for. I tried my hardest not to fall flat on my face while walking in my silver high heels that I wore to prom that year.
The only advice I would have for my younger self is to always follow your dreams. Don’t let anyone step inside your way of forming your future. The day I graduated, everything changed. I was no longer that vulnerable kid that my parents once raised. I was now a beautiful young lady, who now had to take on many responsibilities. Was I ready for this commitment? Maybe I was, maybe I wasn’t. Many people who graduate are not exactly ready to grow up. They may be ready to graduate high school and begin their college careers, but the true term of growing up differs from what they might perceive in their mind.
I had to take on many responsibilities once I graduated, and to be honest I don’t think I was exactly ready. My cell phone bill, car payment, gas, rent, and all living expenses relied on me and me only. It was very stressful to take on all those responsibilities all at once, but that is part of growing up and everyone has to go through it. Unfortunately for me, I wasn’t ready to give up my youth because I enjoyed having everything paid for. Graduating was a true wake up call for me. I would never want to go back to high school, but it would be nice to have those possessions paid for again. That is a true fantasy though, not reality.
I think I was more excited about moving out of my house and being on my own, being my own person, and being my own boss, rather than truly thinking about how hard it was going to be. The first semester of my college year was extremely stressful. I didn’t know how to manage my time and my money, because that was all done for me while I was living at home.
The true advice I would give to younger kids who are about to graduate high school is, follow your dreams every step of the way, and to always listen to your parents. They know what is best for you even if you don’t completely agree with them. They are meant to guide you for a reason, because they are your parents.

Blog # 15: Theory of a Deadman Con't

While the t95 Rock Squad Girls were on stage awaiting for Theory of a Deadman to arrive on stage, my boyfriend and I made our way to the floor, hoping to get close enough to the front. As we were walking up to the front we had to duck and squeeze in between people like we were walking through a twisted maze. Some people don’t mind when people try to get to the front row but others get really mad and shove us. I think to myself, it’s a concert and people need to get over the fact that we are here to have a good time. I didn’t pay money to get shoved around like a piece of meat.
We finally got to our destination, which was about five or so rows from the front. It was good enough because I knew once the concert got started there was going to be massive shoving and pushing. I absolutely hate being around a whole bunch of people. I start to freak out when people are too close to my personal bubble. The reason for this is because I went to a huge concert of around 55,000 people in Kansas City and I was crowd surfing on the whole crowd during a famous rock band, Shinedown, and I got dropped right in the middle of a mosh pit! I thought I was going to be trampled and suffocated because of course all the people around me were at least twice my size and didn’t care that a little girl my size was on the ground. Finally a security guard pulled me out of the oversized shoving crowd so I could breathe again. Being around a huge crowd really isn’t my thing, so I nicely asked my boyfriend if we could move towards the back so I could have some breathing room.
Once finally Theory of a Deadman finally decided to come on stage to perform their awesome show, I always notice that the lead singer tremendously resembles my boyfriend, Tanner. They both have several tattoos on their forearms and they both have the lean muscular body with black spiky hair.
They played several of my favorite songs such as, Hate my Life, Santa Monica, All or Nothing, No Surprise, and So happy. My all time favorite song they played is called “Bad Girlfriend.” That is my favorite song because if fits my personality almost perfect. My boyfriend always says I am a bad girlfriend, but in a good way. Many girls would think that being a “bad girlfriend” is bad, but this song makes it out to girls who are “bad girlfriends” basically means they are bad as in drop dead sexy and every guy truly wants that.
The concert was of course amazing just like every other show they put on. I really hope they come back to Wichita for another show and bring someone good to play with, like one of my favorite other rock bands. Concerts for me are a huge stress reliever because I can really express myself and not care what other people think of me!

Blog # 14: Theory of a Deadman

Theory of a Deadman is a Canadian rock band that was formed in 2001. They came to Wichita, Kansas to perform with Halestorm at the local Cotillion ballroom.
Theory of a Deadman played last because they were the better known group of the four bands playing. I am not sure who the opening two bands were, most likely an unknown local band. When my boyfriend and I arrived at the cotillion, we immediately started to search for our large group of friends that were also going to the concert. My friend Mikaela was there, a girl I used to work with at Club rodeo. Tanner, my boyfriend and I’s friends were there too; Christina, Bubs, Steve, Tiffany, Cole, Brittany, Brittany’s friend, Sean, and my cousin Austin. We had a quite large group to rock out with each other. While the guys went over to the bar to buy some beer to drink, us girls took many of pictures for future memories; that is very typical of us.
Before Halestorm played, the t95 Rock Squad Girls went on stage with the main DJ. I told my friend Christina that we should try and become rock squad girls, because these girls are nothing compared to us hotties! She laughed and totally agreed with me. She then told me she wanted to grab a couple of beers before Halestorm performed so I agreed to walk with her. We went to the bar and found out they don’t accept debit cards, how frustrating! We then walked around trying to find an ATM to get cash out for her. Of course the one we come across is “out of order.” Losing hope we almost gave up until the nice young rocker dude told us there was another ATM located at the entrance. We finally made it to the other ATM and got cash out for her to get beer. As I was walking around behind her, I noticed some very interesting people who came to this concert. I saw several little kids with their parents, which I thought was “odd” because it was a rock concert, not Miley Cyrus! I also found some thug type people. These are the type of people with black baggy pants and chains, and two sleeves of tattoos. I also realized to myself that I see these types of people at every single concert I attend. Other people I noticed were the “emo” group, which include guys wearing skinny jeans, funky shoes, and their black spiky hair covers their face. The last “type” of people I saw was the regular jock/pretty girls. They really don’t fit in at a concert. They stand out horribly when they wear their Hollister wardrobe and designer purses on their shoulders. My friend Christina and I would definitely fit in the “rocker girl” type. I have my tongue, nose, and navel pierced and has several tattoos. My hair looks like a typical rocker chick who is about to have a good time head banging to a concert. I try not to judge people by the way they look when they attend a concert because I know they are here for the same exact reason as I am, to have a great time rocking’ out!
After Halestorm played, Theory of a Deadman was next. I was about to get extremely pumped because they are one of my all time favorite bands. I have seen them in concert about 4 or 5 times. I knew this was going to be an outstanding performance from them, especially because this would be the first time I’ve seen them in Wichita!
The rest of the concert’s details will continue tomorrow.

Blog # 13: Being for the benefit of Mr. Kite

During English class today we were assigned to listen to a wonderful song by the Beatles, Being for the benefit of Mr. Kite and contrast the song to the short clip we watched that played the song in the video, but differently.
We listened to the song first and then it was repeated a second time so we could grasp as much information from the song as possible. I heard several different types of music instruments, from drums to crashing cymbals, to other small instruments that made the entire melody of the song. This song was obviously about a circus and almost sounded like a marching band was playing behind the lead singer. John Lennon was the song writer of this song and a circus poster inspired him to write it. The “Mr. Kite” man is actually William Kite. This song really reminded me of a typical pink Floyd song, also known as a song to get “high” to.
The video clip we saw directly after listening to the song reminded me of exactly like a Tim Burton movie. The graphics were amazing and it was a trippy scene. I absolutely loved the video and I would say the video was better than the actual song by the Beatles. The video really let the song come alive. I could understand and comprehend better while watching the video.
The main difference between the song and the video was the tone. The video had a deeper tone than the original song. Also, the video was creepier sounding and more disturbing than the original song.
I really enjoyed listening to the original song and then incorporating the creepy video afterwards. I am a huge Beatles fan!

Blog # 12: Freewriting

Yesterday as I was patiently waiting outside of the weight room at the heskett center to work out. I noticed this other young man was waiting too just outside the door. We were both anticipating on the weight-lifting class to be dismissed. To avoid the awkwardness of silence I decided to start a friendly conversation with the six foot tall, muscular guy that resembled an ordinary jock or tool. He asked what I was planning on “working out.” That was an odd question to ask but I replied by saying “Not working out too much today because I was sore from exercising yesterday.” He rudely rolled his eyes and probably was thinking to himself “Sore from what, doing crunches or something?” I wasn’t going to be rude in return so I decided to change the subject to something else. I asked what he did today and he replied “The usual of going to class and debating on whether or not if I should try to find a job.” I told hime he should apply at starbucks because we needed more partners. He nodded his head like he might be interested. Shortly after our conversation ended we both went inside to the weight room to do our own workouts. He immediately bee-lined to where the heavy weights were and I went into the other room to stretch my tight hamstring muscles. The smell of the entire weight room was very intense. It had an odor of sweaty old wrestling mats. I always shower after I use the weight room.

Blog # 11: Narrative Essay comments

This first essay due for my English 101 class wasn’t entirely hard. I actually seemed to enjoy writing it because it was a narrative essay, meaning I was able to tell a story over a cherished hilarious family moment. I chose to write my narrative essay over an incident that took place during my senior year spring break, which almost ended in a huge disaster. My siblings and I thought it was would be fun to play with my brother’s sniper rifles in the front yard of our big, blue childhood home. We were having a jolly ‘ole time until the police and all of the squadrons decided to take a journey over to our house to see exactly what was going on. We were scared out of our minds; I would say we defiantly learned our lesson that sunny March day.
Of course, I had a really difficult time coming up with an introduction to my hilarious essay. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to start it off with the word “BOOM”, or a true fact about the dangers of shooting off a sniper rifle and not being trained in doing so. I thought to myself, I wanted this essay to be as graphic, detailed, and funny as possible, so I decided to go with the word “BOOM” and went on from there.
After my introduction was strong and steady, the climax of the story easily fell into place. I was able to relive that scary and hilarious day by memory jotting each and every point that happened. What I did to make it easier on me, I wrote down every main point that I wanted in my essay. It was really easy for me to write my essay in chronological order.
To make my essay as detailed as possible, I typed up my paper, and circled every very that I wanted to change just like my professor suggested we do. I then went to the Google website and typed in the verb that I wanted to change and typed synonym at the end in the search box. I was able to find several synonyms for the words I wanted to change to gain greater detail in my essay.
Just like the introduction, the conclusion was quite difficult for me. I knew the body of my story was strong, so I wanted to make sure my conclusion ended on a strong note as well. What helped me out in writing the conclusion, I re-read my entire essay up to the point where my conclusion needs to be. I studied my essay, and finally after about thirty minutes on contemplating what my conclusion needed to become of, it finally fell into place.
This essay was a great way to start the class. I think my writing skills will improve over time. I know this essay will be fun for my audience to read. I always laugh when I read it because it always takes me back to that day where the almost disaster took place.

Blog # 10: A promise to remember

The evening of my sister’s horrific car accident, my wonderful boyfriend surprised me by coming all the way to Wichita to see me. We haven’t seen each other since the previous Friday because I spent the entire weekend down in Tulsa, Oklahoma to visit my step dad while he was down there for important work business.
After I ate dinner and said goodbye to my sister and goodnight to my mom, I went to my bedroom to spend some alone time with my boyfriend of two years, Tanner. We were just talking about our day and the subject progressed into a more serious topic. He was lying down on my comfy mattress while I was sitting Indian style next to him.
He was being super sweet telling me how much he cared about me and how he would never want to lose me. He also said with a huge grin on his face that we are going to have an extremely long future together. I just smiled and nodded holding back the emotional tears. As he kept talking and I was listening to him open up, he said “I only have an eye for you, there is no one that is ever going to come in between us, I want to make a promise to stay true to you and I promise I will never hurt you.” He then whipped out this voodoo magic and then all of a sudden I see a small black velvet ring box lying on his chest. He then asked me “will you accept this promise ring from me?” He face turned beat red showing me how nervous and genuine he was about the question. I of coursed responded with a huge head nod and eyes tearing up!
This was a huge step for us because we have been together for two years now and we really needed to take it to the next step if we were serious about each other. I wasn’t exactly ready to move in with each other, but the ring defiantly says a lot about our relationship. He is not the mushy, lovey dovey type of guy; he is more of living in the moment type of guy. For him to give me a promise ring really showed me how much he cared about me. I was so ecstatic that I had to post my new status on facebook to let me friends and family know the surprising news. As soon as I posted my status “I am so happy that my man gave me a promise ring, I love you more than anything Tanner Sparman!” I had multiple notifications that people were commenting on my status. I had a total of 32 people who “liked” my status and approximately 24 comments from people stating how excited they were for me. One girl even said “It’s about time he puts a dang ring on that finger, when am I going to hear wedding bells?” Another close friend of mine said “I know it’s not like an engagement ring or anything, but would it still be okay if I threw you a bachelorette party?” I was laughing at some of the comments made by my friends. Some of tanner’s family members commented on how funny it was that he couldn’t wait until Valentines day!
For the next several days I showed off my new rock on my left hand. People at work were really happy for me because I constantly talk about him to coworkers and to customers telling them how much of a great guy he was. It pretty much summed up what I had to say about my boyfriend when I showed them my ring. This will be a promise I will never forget; it was perfect!

Blog # 9: Guardian Angel End

My sister’s car wasn’t as damaged nearly as bad as the other small Kia. The damage on the Kia was very extent. The air bag had deployed and the front of the car was completely destroyed. It looked like Godzilla had taken a huge bite out of the front. The engine was exposed and the driver’s side tire was flat. The driver’s side door was so mangled that it wouldn’t even shut.
My sister’s jeep was quite damaged. Her entire front end was mangled. Both head lights were knocked out and the grill was lying in the middle of the street. Her front passenger tire was at a 90 degree angle and the axle was completely broken. My sister said the impact was so severe that her knitted beanie flew off of her head and landed in the back seat. Also, her iPod that was hooked up via cigarette lighter flew off its import and landed in the back seat of the passenger side.
I asked my sister what all happened as soon as the accident took place. I for one wouldn’t know the first thing to do if I was involved in a wreck or witness a wreck take place. She said as soon as the impact happened, a lady who was almost involved in the accident herself, came running over to both vehicles to make sure everyone involved was okay. She told Laura and the other young girl to stay in their vehicle in case they were injured. She immediately called 911 and told the operator the exact location of the car accident; Woodlawn and Marjorie. As interesting as the story was, I asked what happened when the police and ambulance arrived. She said they immediately blocked off the street to eliminate other cars running into the already wrecked vehicles. She filled out bundles and bundles of paperwork, called insurance, and got checked out by the EMS. The paramedics quickly found out that nothing was wrong with either of the girls and the ambulance was soon on their way to help other people that may need their help more.
After everything was finally done, about an hour and a half later, we all went home. My mom, sister, and I were starving by this point. My mom quickly ordered pizza and had it delivered. While we were eating we kept saying how thankful we were that my sister, Laura wasn’t harmed. She was extremely lucky that she was wearing her seatbelt. She could have easily knocked out her pretty teeth or broken some bones, or even worse, she could have been killed. There was defiantly a guardian angel resting on her shoulder that day, possibly my aunt Jeanna.

Blog 8: Guardian Angel Con't

As I was running around my house trying to find shoes, I stumbled across my knitted boots. Being in such a hurry, I failed to put on any socks in this frigid weather. I quickly grabbed my coat and bolted out the door. As I was about to fly out of my garage in my black Jeep Cherokee, I saw my mom pulling in the driveway. I quickly ran over to her car and said “Laura has been in a car accident and I need to go pick her up, would you want to come with me.” Her eyes massive grew as I told her the shocking news. Her voice cracked and said “Is she okay?” I quickly nodded her head and told her we needed to leave now if she was going to come with me. As we were backing up quickly in the driveway, I said “Mom, you need to call aunt Lisa and tell her we won’t be able to make it to dinner tonight.” My mom memorized her phone number and used my cell phone to quickly call my aunt.
I was trying to arrive to the scene so quickly, but remembered that my sister was obviously not going anywhere and it was very stupid of me to drive fast on this icy road. I called her once again and asked where she was exactly. She said she was on Woodlawn just north of Central. I told her I would be there in about 15 to 20 minutes depending on how traffic was. It was rushhour and everyone was driving home from work.
As we were about to turn onto Woodlawn just off of central the only thing we saw was a mosaic appearance of red, blue, and yellow flashing lights. Just looking at all the emergency vehicles scared us. Both lanes going north on central was blocked off by a police car. Everyone who was driving had to detour around onto a small residential street. There was only one lane for people driving southbound. It was a huge mess with all of the cars having to merge into one lane.
I parked my car onto a side street and quickly ran over to my sister. There were three cop cars surrounding the accident and an ambulance. The ambulance was driving away as we approached my sister’s car. I was scared, thinking to myself, who might have just left in the ambulance. My sister was still in her olive green Jeep Liberty filling out paperwork with eyes full of tears. I hated seeing her upset, it just killed me.
The other girl, who seemed to be in her upper twenties, was in the back seat of a police car filling out paper work. The damage to her car was too extent for her to stay seated in her car. The rest of the story will continue in tomorrow’s blog.

Blog 7- Guardian Angel

My day started out as an average Monday. Waking up bright and early, went to work to please all customers, went to my classes to figure out that my English class was canceled. I was a little frustrated because I wasn’t able to check my e-mail to see if any of my classes were canceled. I went to English and found no one there. I sprinted to Ahblah library to see what the ordeal was. Since I was already at Wichita State for my first class and I knew my Anatomy and Physiology professor teacher wouldn’t cancel class, I decided to work on my blog for English class.

After all of my classes ended for the day, I went home to get ready for dinner plans with my sister, mom, aunt, and cousin. We were planning on meeting a Big Cheese Pizza in Andover, Kansas. I was extremely excited because it has been a long time since we have ate there. We were scheduled to meet at Big cheese around 5:30. My sister was supposed to drive over to my parents house so my mom, sister, and I could ride together. As I was getting ready and waiting for my mom and sister to arrive at the house I received a phone call. I looked on the caller-ID and it was my sister. I eaglerly said “hi.” She asked if my mom was home yet, I answered no. She then burst into tears and said she was in a horrific car accident. My heart fell to my stomach. I immediately replied “Laura, oh my god, are you okay? What happened?”

While her voice was shaky she told me that her car hit a patch of black ice, spun around in a complete 360 degrees and slid into the other oncoming lane and hit a car head on. She also said she was fine but that her leg hurt. As she was explaining everything that happened I heard emergency vehicles arriving to the scene. I asked her if she needed me to pick her up, and she said “I don’t know, I am so shook up right now.” I wanted to cry with her because I can’t stand when she is upset. She then politely asked me to call her husband, Angel. I quickly hung up the phone with my sister telling her I loved her and reassured her everything was going to be okay. I called Angel, which is something I rarely do. He quickly answered with discomfort in his voice. “Hello?” “Angel? I just wanted to let you know that Laura was in a wreck, but thankfully she is okay, just don’t freak out, ok?” “Are you serious?” I told him exactly what happened. He was at the fire department at the Air Force base, so he obviously couldn’t have left work to go to the scene of the accident to make sure she was okay.

The phone rang, it was Laura. Still in shock after the wreck, she shakily asked me to pick her up. I immediately told her I was on my way. The story of the accident will continue in tomorrow’s blog.

Blog # 6: Subjective VS. Objective

The difference between subjective writing and objective writing is quite broad. However, they can be extremely similar as well. Objective writing is basically talking about true facts, such as talking on the news. Objective writing is also real, you can talk about, hold it, and smell it, ECT. Subjective writing is mainly about personal opinion and emotions, such as moods, happiness, ECT.

Today I chose to talk about coffee for my objective writing. I for one can come up with hundreds of true facts because I am a coffee master at Starbucks. I have done countless of coffee tastings while at work. I can distinguish a brand of coffee by the boldness; mild, medium, bold, or extra bold. I can even taste specific herbs and spices in our coffees. Some of our coffees are very acidic, as others are very spicy; such like our Thanksgiving blend.

You can tell a lot about a coffee if you know where it is from. Every single tiny little coffee bean has a distinctive flavor that comes from its land of origin. Our Latin American coffee has a great balance, medium body, and clean and fresh finish. On the package it is labeled "medium" because it’s not too bold or too weak. Some people rather prefer to taste coffee that is weak with pouring tablespoon after tablespoon of cream and sugar to eliminate the bitterness of the coffee. That is their personal opinion. Ask a trained barista what kind of coffee would suit a person who likes a not too bold or a too weak coffee; I would defiantly suggest a Latin American coffee.

To continue with my objective writing and to go into more detail about the entire process of how our Starbucks coffee is made, I am going to first tell you all the places where our delicious coffee is made. We grow our coffee in all sorts of different countries to allow different taste for our loyal customers; Guatemala, Mexico, Asia, Africa, Ethiopia, and many others.

When we have our coffee in our stores we first have to grind it. After grinding it we gently place the coffee into a large flat bottomed filter and into a huge coffee urn. Depending on how many scoops of coffee we use, determines on how much water we put into the urn. One scoop is a quarter batch of coffee, which only makes about 2 vinte sizes of coffee. 2 scoops of coffee is a half a batch of coffee, and 4 scoops of ground coffee, is of course a full batch of coffee. If a quarter batch makes 2 vinte cups of Joe, then obviously a full batch would make around 8 vinte cups of coffee. After the coffee urn is completely done brewing, it is now time to serve to the awaiting customers. That is how the process of grinding and brewing coffee takes place.

For my subjective writing I am going to explain in my own personal opinion on the benefits of getting a tattoo. There are many reasons why people get tattoos. Some people get them just to have something on their body because they might feel like they fit in better. Others enjoy the pain, while other simply loves art. I currently have three tattoos, in which they all mean something personal to me. I have a hibiscus flower on my left lower hip that symbolizes something for my sister and me. She has an identical flower on her left ankle and we both received this small piece of art in Aruba. My second tattoo is on my right lower foot. It is a very colorful and detailed tropical fish. I received this tattoo in the Dominican Republic that symbolizes me for getting certified as a scuba diver. I have always wanted to become certified and I thought it was be the most perfect chance to do it on a tropical island. This fish on my foot will always remind me the hard work I had to put in, in order to become a certified scuba diver. My third tattoo is located on my ribcage on the right side. It is a massive sun that indicates the band “sublime.” Many people don’t know who that band is, but in a later blog I will explain in greater detail. I personally think that if everyone had some sort of art on their bodies that truly meant something to them, I think this world would really show its true colors.

Blog # 5: Tulsa, Oklahoma

Today is finally Friday! It has been a long, stressful week for me due to all the homework, quizzes, and of course working everyday! To take some tension off of my mind, my mother and I are heading to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the weekend to spend some time with my step dad at the extraordinary hotel he is staying at. The reason why he is in Tulsa is because Spirit Aerosystems sent him down there to train and manage employees. He has been there since the middle of January. He told us the hotel was absolutely amazing and I was heading down there to see if it was in fact so amazing.
My mother and I left Wichita at approximately 3:30 PM so we could arrive in Tulsa before it was too dark. I took my laptop with me so I could work on future homework assignments that included a personal reflection paper for my Men and Masculinities class and my narrative essay for my English class. Before we were even on the turnpike my stupid laptop died on me! I could have sworn on my life that it was fully charged so it could have lasted at least an hour or so. Instead of working on my dead laptop, I decided to catch up on some reading for my Men and Masculinities class. There is so much reading for that class and it is of course extremely small writing. 10 pages of reading seriously took me an hour to read!
I read for about an hour and a half and decided to close my book. My mom and I talked the rest of the way to Tulsa. We were talking mainly about the past and special memories we both shared with each other. Those special memories included; both trips to Hawaii, vacationing to Aruba, Dominican Republic, and the special wedding trip to the Bahamas. We also talked about when her, my dad and my oldest sister used to live in Frankfurt, Germany. I was amazed at how differently Germans lived than the Americans.
When we finally arrived in Tulsa, we struggled to find the Embassy Suites at which we were supposed to stay at. As we finally arrived, my step dad greeted us in the lobby. Before we carried our big luggage bags up to the fourth floor of our suite, my parents wanted to have some drinks at the bar. The hotel has a free happy hour for all of aged guest. It runs from 5:30-7:30 PM and it has unlimited amounts of alcohol. You could chose from beer, to wine, to even strong mixed drinks. As we sat in the lobby area for over an hour eating snack mix and drinking, we all wanted to eat some dinner. My mom and I were exhausted from the travel and we really didn’t want to go out to eat. We all ate at the delicious restaurant located inside the hotel. It was called “Cattleman’s Steakhouse.” We ordered two appetizers of shrimp cocktail and two identical meals of the Halibut fish. My mom and I shared the halibut fish dinner while my step dad was able to consume the entire dish. The halibut fish was to die for. It was better than any fish I have ever had on a Caribbean Island! It was very tender and juicy while having a hint of garlic and butter sauce. It was so tender you could take apart with your own fingers. The dinner was so massive that I wasn’t able to even finish my half of the portion. The dinner also came with an interesting salad that was half a head of lettuce with ranch dressing and tomatoes on it.
After dinner I was even more exhausted. I was so ready to crawl into that big warm bed in our huge suite. As I brushed my teeth and jumped into my silk leopard print jammies from Victoria secret, I laid onto that fluffy white bed, closed my eyes, and went into a very deep sleep.

Blog # 4: My pet peeve

Everyone has something that just irritates them to no end. Whether it is sloppiness, rudeness, carelessness, or even bumper stickers, not following the driving rules, using the same word over and over again, or double dipping. Whatever your specific “pet peeve” is, everyone has something that annoys them to no end.
My all time high pet peeve is rudeness; especially at a public place where someone is trying to give you great customer service. I work at Starbucks Coffee as a barista and attempt to create the best possible customer service to everyone. I have been employed in customer service jobs for the past four years of my life. Being rude to paying customers is not in my vocabulary. However, when a customer is being rude to an employee it is extremely difficult to maintain that customer satisfaction. There is no excuse for being rude and thousands of people live their life as being disrespectful everyday to whom they come into contact with.
It all started around 9:00 am on an average busy day at Starbucks. I recently got back to work from my thirty minute lunch break and had to immediately snap into action. I was forced to do the drive-thru window which consisted of taking orders over the headset, taking money at the window, and handing out all scrumptious beverages and tasty pastries to our awaiting customers inside their warm and cozy vehicle. As I was carefully passing out the grande size coffee with cream to this woman I have never seen before she immediately gave it back to me and assured me there wasn’t enough cream in her coffee. Trying to make this customer feel extra special I nicely put in some extra cream for this lady who wore square black glasses and had dark brown dread locks as her hair style. She was an interesting woman and at first she seemed like an average impolite customer we see each and every day. As I was returning the newly handcrafted beverage to the lady holding up our drive thru line, she gave me a look of discomfort. She immediately started getting more offensive with me stating that her coffee tasted and had a distinct odor like perfume. She obviously saw me add the extra cream to her coffee because I did it right in front of her plain looking face. She handed the beverage back to me once again and I dumped out the coffee. I grabbed a brand new cup of joe from a completely different coffee pot, added some cream from a different container, and even put the coffee with cream in a new cup. I handed her drink out thinking this was the last time I was going to have to deal with this vulgar woman. To my surprise she didn’t drive off! She gave me this look like she wanted to kill me, but secretly the feeling was mutual. I then opened the window again receiving very offensive language from this devil woman. She commented very rudely how she did not want me to serve her coffee and to have someone else give her the coffee. She kept saying her coffee smelt and tasted like perfume. I wondered how because I obviously wasn’t wearing any. The only way she could smell an odor of perfume was if she was receiving the smell off of my wrist from my hand lotion I put on while on my lunch break. This woman was a poor excuse of a human being. She had no right to treat me like a child. I was trying my hardest to give her the best experience here at Starbucks, but she ruined that when she accused me of wearing perfume making her drink taste like I purposely added perfume into her grande cup of joe.
I was extremely sick of dealing with this insulting woman so I grabbed another coworker of mine and informed her of this ridiculous situation with the barbarian waiting at the window to receive her new cup of coffee from a different barista. My coworker nicely accepted the challenge and gave this woman a cup of coffee. While the monster was still holding up our drive thru line she slowly smelled every inch of that grande cup to make sure it didn’t have a perfume odor. She tasted the coffee and gurgled it in her dirty mouth. After holding up our drive thru for approximately 5 minutes she sped off like she was on a mission.
Our drive thru line was out to the street of Central. The next lady that pulled to our window had an angry look on her round face. I quickly explained the situation to her and she was nice enough to accept my apology.
After the rush finally came to a hault I went to the back to relieve some tension in my head. The dread locked lady had seriously ruined my entire day. I wanted to let out a long scream of relief. There is no reason to be rude to someone! Some people are just naturally snobby and that makes me so angry. I am even very polite to people at Mcdolands because they deserve politeness just as much as the customer does.
Like I said before, everyone has something that really grinds their gears, mine is unfortunately something I have to deal with on a daily basis, rudeness. What is your pet peeve? If you can’t possibly figure out what your pet peeve is, I am sure you can look one up at http://www.thesocialcentre.com/101-pet-peeves/

Blog # 3: Meditation

This semester I am currently taking a Meditation class on Wednesday nights. The Meditation class is held in the gymnastics room at the Hescett Center building. As class begins every week, the students sign the attendance sheet and sit on the sticky, sweaty mat. We all wait patiently on Dale Martin, our teacher to begin class.
As class begins, Dale speaks in monotone for the first thirty minutes of our 1 hour and 20 minute class time. Today he spoke mainly about his life history. I found very interesting that we have many things in common. First off, I noticed that we obviously have the exactly same last name. Then he mentioned he was catholic and asked the entire class who else was catholic to raise their hand. I lifted my hand proudly high in the air because I was too a catholic and was baptized as an infant to join the catholic religion. Then to tie all the coincidences he then stated he was of German decent. I was absolutely shocked, because I was also of German decent. I secretly thought to myself, maybe my teacher and I was related. If that were the case I surely hope I get an outstanding grade in the class.
As I tried my hardest not to fall asleep while he was talking about himself and his life history, he then surprised the class with an interesting fact about him. He stated that meditation saved his life. Dale told us he would get horribly painful migraines when he was younger. He decided after 7 years of pain to take the challenge of joining a meditation class. To this day he believes meditation has saved his life due to not having migraines and the stress he once had when he was younger.
Finally when the actual meditation section started during our class our teacher told us to spread out and make a circle. Sounds pretty tough, huh? After my class and I followed the directions of becoming a circle we were then instructed to lie back in anatomical position. Then we were to loosen up our distal joints, which included our hands and feet and roll them in opposite directions of each other. Once our joints were all loose and flimsy our eyes were told to shut. The lights went off and the meditation was to begin.
We were instructed to take extremely deep breaths filling the lower parts of our longs first, followed by a deep exhale. After several minutes of deep breathing our mind went into la-la land. I personally wanted to drift off to sleep, but decided I should see where my mind took me. During the thirty minutes of meditation I didn’t exactly fall asleep, but I dozed off and was still aware of my surroundings. There was a young man sitting next to me that snored like an elephant! I wanted to tell him to quit that bulldozer noise he was making out of his nose, but that was be very inappropriate considering everyone was trying to relax.
When Dale announced for the class to bring their awareness back to the room my fingers and toes went numb and had a tingly feeling to them. Other announced they could see bright vibrant colors. Another student said he fell asleep.
Meditation affects everyone differently. I don’t think about anything and just focus on relaxing; while others think about what hardships they once had years ago. Meditation to me means to relax the mind and I personally don’t think trying to make yourself upset is anything relaxing.

Blog # 2: 52 Annual Grammy Awards

Today is Tuesday and I don’t have class at all! Thank the lord for that! So usually on Tuesdays I try to get caught up on laundry, homework, and my DVR’d shows on television. Right now I am watching the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards.
The very first performance was Lady Gaga; I am a huge fan of hers and I never know what to expect of her when she performs her amazing songs live. She wore this green metallic leotard with sparkly green angel wings. She performed her most famous song, “Pokerface.” Then right after she performed Lady Gaga and Elton John sang a duet and played the piano. They did an amazing job together. Elton John is very famous for his piano playing and he is actually coming to Wichita with Billy Joel this coming spring in the new Intrust Bank Arena. That is exciting, but not something I really want to attend.
After the performance of Lady Gaga and Elton John a man appeared on stage that I have never seen before. He almost resembled Bob Saget due to being tall and lanky. He started cracking jokes and trying to be funny but I thought he was kind of being rude. He mentioned that Justin Timberlake brought “sexy back” and then he commented on how Susan Boyle would take it away again. I thought that was so rude! He was basically telling national television that Susan Boyle wasn’t exactly sexy. Then this not so funny man kept asking his daughter who was in the audience if he was “cool.” She shook her head no because I think he embarrassed her. He then shouted out to his daughter to stay away from Katie Perry. Wow, really? I personally think this man made himself look like a complete fool on stage. The absolute only thing that was funny that came out of that ignorant man was he said “I love about the Grammies that you never know who they are going to put together (referring back to Lady Gaga and Elton John), I can’t wait to see what combinations we are going to get tonight; Neil Young and Pulso de Mingo, maybe Beyonce and Sasha Fierce, or what about Pink, Green Day, and the Black eyed peas? The pink-eyed green peas.” That was the only reference he made that actually made me laugh.
The nominees for the song of the year were as follows: Lady Gaga with “pokerface,” Maxwell with “pretty wings,” Beyonce with “single ladies,” Kings of Leon with “use somebody,” Taylor Swift with “you belong with me.” The Grammy went to Beyonce! I personally think Lady Gaga should have won because she has accomplished so much this past year.
The next performace that was in importance to me was Beyonce wearing a robotic outfit made from I believe either Gucci or Dolce and Gabbana. Her performace was amazing! Following her performance was Pink with an aerial performance. I can’t exactly remember the song, but I do remember the crazy stunts she performed. She was dressed in a very revealing white outfit. She dangled from a thin piece of cloth from the ceiling. If she would have fallen she would have died instantly because she was very high off the ground and spinning like crazy. It was a very neat performace and something I wouldn’t have expected for the Grammies. The Grammies don’t allow you to lip sing any songs which was crazy because Pink was spinning like a top on a table up in the air and was able to sing her song just as well as if she was standing upwards.
The next Grammy award was record of the year; the nominees were “halo” by Beyonce, “I got a feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas, “Use somebody” by Kings of Leon, “Pokerface” by Lady Gaga, and “You belong with me” by Taylor Swift. The Grammy went to Kings of Leon. That record was very good but I would have guessed either Lady Gaga or the Black Eyed Peas to take home the Grammy.
There are still about 2 hours left in this amazing and fulfilled show. Jamie Foxx is singing “blame it” on stage right now. That is one of my favorite songs from last year. I am going to focus on watching it and get back to blogging tomorrow.

Blog #1: A little about me and my goals for this class

My full name is Melanie Brooke Martin and I currently attend Wichita State University as a full time student. My major as of now is Dental Hygiene and I also want to acquire a minor in Exercise Science to become a personal trainer on the side of being a dental hygienist. Those goals may seem very unrealistic, but if I just simply put in extra efforts I know I can succeed in my future.

I was born and raised in a very small town of Wellington, Kansas. I still have connections with many people who still live there. My dad still lives in a big blue house that was built when I was only three years old; he lives alone in the cold, empty house with an underground pool in the backyard. Also, my boyfriend, Tanner lives in Wellington too. He bought the house he is living in when he was only 21 years old. He has been there for almost 2 years now and I couldn't be more proud of him. Our 2 year anniversary is later this month and I couldn't have asked for a better boyfriend like him. He is my shining star and the entire support I need to get through school.

My family is a very close knit families like you see in movies. I think once my family all got over the divorce between my parents we all became the support for each other. My parents got divorced when I was barely a freshman in high school. It was extremely hard on me because I had to choose between my parents. I decided since I was a young teenage girl I needed to live with my mom. My dad was extremely devastated and we didn't speak to each other for almost 2 years. Now that he got over the fact I chose to live with my mom, my dad and I have became much closer.

In my family I have one older sister named Laura and an older brother named Derek. Laura is 25 years old and a second year teacher at Gammon Elementary here in Wichita. She isn't exactly thrilled with her job so she going back to Wichita State to get her Master’s in Education Counseling. My brother is 22 years old and is currently enlisted in the United States Air Force and is serving an 18 month deployment over in Baghdad, Iraq. When he returns to the states he will be officially bases here in Wichita, Kansas at McConnell Air Force base. We are all extremely excited!

Okay, enough about my family and I. The goals I have for this class are pretty simple. I basically want to be able to write better. I think I always have good ideas when it comes to writing an essay but getting started is absolutely torture for me! There are all these things that pop into my busy mind when beginning a paper, but it seems like I am not sure how to put them into place when drafting my paper. I also want to become better at grammar too. I think I overuse commas when they aren’t exactly needed. Hopefully by the end of this semester I will be an awesome essay writer!
