Blog #1: A little about me and my goals for this class

My full name is Melanie Brooke Martin and I currently attend Wichita State University as a full time student. My major as of now is Dental Hygiene and I also want to acquire a minor in Exercise Science to become a personal trainer on the side of being a dental hygienist. Those goals may seem very unrealistic, but if I just simply put in extra efforts I know I can succeed in my future.

I was born and raised in a very small town of Wellington, Kansas. I still have connections with many people who still live there. My dad still lives in a big blue house that was built when I was only three years old; he lives alone in the cold, empty house with an underground pool in the backyard. Also, my boyfriend, Tanner lives in Wellington too. He bought the house he is living in when he was only 21 years old. He has been there for almost 2 years now and I couldn't be more proud of him. Our 2 year anniversary is later this month and I couldn't have asked for a better boyfriend like him. He is my shining star and the entire support I need to get through school.

My family is a very close knit families like you see in movies. I think once my family all got over the divorce between my parents we all became the support for each other. My parents got divorced when I was barely a freshman in high school. It was extremely hard on me because I had to choose between my parents. I decided since I was a young teenage girl I needed to live with my mom. My dad was extremely devastated and we didn't speak to each other for almost 2 years. Now that he got over the fact I chose to live with my mom, my dad and I have became much closer.

In my family I have one older sister named Laura and an older brother named Derek. Laura is 25 years old and a second year teacher at Gammon Elementary here in Wichita. She isn't exactly thrilled with her job so she going back to Wichita State to get her Master’s in Education Counseling. My brother is 22 years old and is currently enlisted in the United States Air Force and is serving an 18 month deployment over in Baghdad, Iraq. When he returns to the states he will be officially bases here in Wichita, Kansas at McConnell Air Force base. We are all extremely excited!

Okay, enough about my family and I. The goals I have for this class are pretty simple. I basically want to be able to write better. I think I always have good ideas when it comes to writing an essay but getting started is absolutely torture for me! There are all these things that pop into my busy mind when beginning a paper, but it seems like I am not sure how to put them into place when drafting my paper. I also want to become better at grammar too. I think I overuse commas when they aren’t exactly needed. Hopefully by the end of this semester I will be an awesome essay writer!
